An Exploration of Music: Early Influences and Rekindling in the Digital Era

Tracing the Melodic Path: A Musical Odyssey from the 1960s to the 1980s

My journey through the realms of music began in the 1960s, nurtured by the eclectic tastes of my parents. The melodies of Elvis, the Carpenters, Streisand, and the Yardbirds filled my early years, laying the foundation for a lifelong love affair with music. As the 1970s unfolded, my musical landscape broadened with the discovery of bands like Thin Lizzy, Toto, Santana, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. This era also marked my foray into playing the acoustic guitar and performing in various venues, from local television appearances to school events and supporting renowned local musicians.

The Analog Era and Early Musical Ventures

The 1980s were a time of exploration and professional growth as I ventured into assembly coding, a career that granted me financial stability and the chance to travel extensively. These journeys to Germany, Ireland, and the United States, before the advent of the internet, significantly enriched my musical palette. My involvement in the tech scene, particularly running a bulletin board service and creating the WarDialer with a Swedish hacker, paralleled my musical creativity, although I rarely shared my compositions with the bands I played with.

Inspired by Phil Lynott’s melodic craftsmanship, I honed a unique style, transforming potentially heavy songs into softer rock and pop tunes. My fascination with synthesizers, spurred by artists like Jean-Michel Jarre, led me to experiment with legendary analog synths like Moog and Oberheim, and to become proficient in programming the DX-7.

A Pause and a Resurgence

Following a hiatus that spanned over three decades, my engagement with music remained dormant until a significant moment in 2021. A generous gift from my wife and daughter—a fully equipped home studio—on our 60th anniversary rekindled my passion for music, propelling me into the world of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and enabling me to re-record my initial tracks.

Overcoming Challenges with Music

The end of 2022 brought unexpected challenges, as a blood clot in my brain forced me to close my coding business and left me facing an uncertain future. Despite these obstacles, the support of friends and my undiminished ability to play the keyboard inspired me to continue my musical pursuits. My resilience was further tested when I unearthed over a thousand MIDI compositions from my archives, hinting at the extensive scope of my musical creativity.

Rediscovery and Collaboration

This period of rediscovery was illuminated by the presence of Kate Rosendal, whose encouragement and collaboration breathed new life into tracks like “Tess” and “Bazooka.” Together, we navigated the challenges, transforming them into opportunities for artistic expression.

A Symphony of Experiences

From the soundtrack of my 1960s childhood through the discoveries of the 1970s and the technological and musical explorations of the 1980s, to the recent revival of my musical career, my journey encapsulates the enduring power of music. It’s a testament to the transformative effect of melody, creativity, and perseverance through the decades.

This narrative, punctuated by a photo capturing a moment with Kim (Super), Bjørn (Nicky Monet), Ricky Hanson, and myself in Copenhagen in the late ’80s, serves as a vivid reminder of the journey, the challenges overcome, and the timeless influence of music in my life.
